The LORD on High Is Mighty

Psalm 93:4 – “Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty!”

Our family recently returned from our 12th annual trip to Fenwick Island, Delaware. A huge blessing by my mother-in-law, we look forward each year to our week in Fenwick Island, cherishing the annual traditions it brings, while we relish the opportunity to soak in the summer sun one last time before the school bell rings and signals the beginning of a new (school) year.

This year the ocean was particularly inviting, boasting temperatures in the mid-70s, nearly a match for the weather greeting us as we stepped outside our cottage doors. Unlike some years, everyone got in. Everyone got wet.

There’s nothing on earth quite like the ocean. The proximity of the house we stay in each year allows the opportunity to just sit and listen to the waves and gaze at their beauty. I love that. There’s something so majestic about the power of the ocean tides, the relentless rhythm of its actions. It can make you jeer with laughter one moment and then knock the breath right out of your lungs as it pulls you off your feet the next. Its waves can invigorate you, and then frighten you, and then revive you again.

The ocean is unpredictable. It’s majestic; it’s mighty.

Every trip to the beach reminds me of Psalm 93, and I wonder again at the power and majesty of our Almighty God.

“Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty!”

The psalmist exclaims that “The LORD reigns; he is robed in Majesty” (Ps. 93:1). Against the backdrop of human depravity and the unpredictable wickedness of men stressed in the previous psalm (Psalm 92:6-9), the author here glories in the Sovereign Rule and Power of the Almighty God:

Mightier than the Ocean

Our Majestic God holds the world in His hands and under His Sovereign rule and control. His throne is established, and from everlasting to everlasting HE is God.

Verse 3 of this psalm speaks of “floods (that) have lifted up their voice… the floods (that) lift up their roaring.” Forces of evil and darkness will rise up and roar; they threaten oppression; they oppose the kingdom of God; at times, they appear to rule.

Yet, the psalmist glories in the eternal perspective, the only true reality, that God alone reigns (v. 1).

“The seas have lifted up, O LORD,
the seas have lifted up their voice;
the seas have lifted up their pounding

Maybe you, at times, feel like chaos is the only order of the day; that the seas are pounding you with relentless abandon, like you can’t get your footing against all that opposes you to knock you down.

That’s when we need to remember Psalm 93:4. The LORD is Mightier than the thunder of the great waters and the breakers of the sea. He controls even the crashing of the ocean tides.

As the forces of evil and opposition lift up their voice to roar, to wreak havoc, to terrorize, and to oppress, they are not the final authority. They are not ultimately in control. “Mightier is the LORD”; “The LORD on high is mighty.”

The LORD God Almighty, the Majestic, Everlasting God is the One who rules and reigns. And He speaks comfort to His people who are tempted to fear:

“But now thus says the LORD,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the LORD your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior'” (Isaiah 43:1-3a)

No matter how high the waves rise, our God is in control of them. My soul, trust today in your Majestic, Mighty, Sovereign, Reigning God and be refreshed again in the Ocean of His love and mercy. HE is Mighty, and He is for you in Christ.
