Hope for the Distressed Soul

Psalm 4:1;3 – “Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!… But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him.”

man closed his eyes to pray

Here is hope laid out for the distressed soul: God hears your prayers.

Has He not given you relief time and time again in response to your cries? He will do it again (2 Cor. 1:10).

Think of all the moments of desperation that have led you to prayerful dependence on the Lord. You cried out for deliverance and received His salvation. Not one prayer of yours was answered because of your own righteousness. Will He deny your requests for relief this time? When you pray, you are praying to the God of your righteousness, the One who provided your righteousness in Christ Jesus (Romans 1:16-17) who lived a perfect life for you. If God did not spare His own Son, how will He not also with him, graciously give us all things? (Romans 8:32).

God is gracious and He will hear your cries.

This is an apt description for the Christian life: Distress leads to desperation. Desperation reveals our dependence. Dependence fuels our devotion and believing prayer leads to our deliverance.

Bring every need to the throne of grace and never shy away from crying out to such a gracious God who hears your prayers!
